How to play

What's the goal?

The panel at the top shows a few animal combos. Each one is hidden somewhere in the grid. Find them all before the timer runs out to clear the level. The faster you finish, the more stars and bonus points you earn.

How do I select a combo?

Swipe across the tiles in a straight line, or tap the first tile and then the last tile. Combos can run across, down or diagonally, and forwards or backwards, just like a word search.

Why did my timer go down when I picked wrong?

On Normal, a wrong pick costs 2 seconds, and on Hard it costs 4. Easy has no penalty and gives you 50% more time. Change the difficulty in Options. The penalty changes right away, and the time limit from your next level.

Do the levels ever end?

No. Every level is a freshly made board. The grid grows from 4×4 up to 8×8 as you advance (every 10 levels), with more and longer combos to find.

I ran out of time. Can I keep going?

In the app you can watch an optional short video for 15 extra seconds, once per level. You keep the board and any combos you've already found. Or tap Try again for a fresh board on the same level.

How do hints work?

Tap the yellow light bulb during a level to light up the first critter of a combo you haven't found yet. Free hints (the number on the bulb) come from perfect sets. In the app you can also watch a short video for a hint. Each combo can be hinted once.

What are sets?

Levels come in sets of 5. Get 3 stars on all five levels of a set for a free hint.

Progress and settings

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your level, score, best score, free hints and settings are saved on your device automatically. Tap Continue on the start screen to pick up where you left off.

Can I move my progress to a new phone?

Not at the moment. There are no accounts, so progress stays on the device where you played. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data also erases it.

How do I start over?

Tap New game on the start screen. That restarts from level 1. Your best score is kept.

I can't hear the music or sound effects
  • Check that Music and Sound effects are on and the volume is up in Options.
  • On iPhone and iPad, make sure the device isn't in Silent mode. Silent mode mutes game sound.
  • Sound starts after your first tap. Browsers and phones don't allow games to play sound before that.
Does it work offline?

Yes, the game itself plays without an internet connection. Ads need a connection, so they simply won't appear while you're offline.

Ads and privacy

What ads does the game show?

The app shows a small banner at the bottom of the screen, and a full-screen ad after every third level you clear (never more than once every 90 seconds). Videos for extra time or hints are always your choice. The website version has no ads.

Can I pay to remove ads?

Not right now. Ads keep Critter Combos free to play. Let us know if you'd like an ad-free option. It helps us decide what to build next.

How do I change my ad privacy choices?
  • If you live where privacy laws require consent (such as the EU, UK or some US states), open Options → Privacy choices in the app at any time.
  • iPhone and iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
  • Android: Settings → Google → Ads (or Settings → Privacy → Ads) to reset or delete your advertising ID.

Read the full privacy policy for details.

Do you collect my personal information?

No. There are no accounts, and we never ask for your name or email. In the app, our ad partner Google AdMob collects some device information to show ads, as explained in the privacy policy.

Other

Can I play on my computer?
